Snorkeling in Hawaii in 2010
STRIPEBELLY PUFFER There were a lot of these guys at Kahalu'u Beach. They would often swim directly toward me, and I'd think they were going to bump into my snorkel mask. I had trouble taking their picture, because they would be too close!

MOORISH IDOL: This species always seemed to be swimming in pairs--and would often be seen gnawing away at something in the coral. Beautiful fish! (A relative of the surgeonfish)

YELLOW TANG: This seemed to be about the most common fish we saw wherever we snorkeled. Note the white tail spine--always present.

CONVICT TANG: These are very common, often seen in a big school. We saw many schools of very small ones also. Hawaiian name is "manini"

ORNATE BUTTERFLYFISH: One of several kinds of butterflyfish we saw. This one was really digging his way into something that must have been tasty!

RACCOON BUTTERFLYFISH: We would usually see this species swimming up higher in the water, rather than digging down in the coral. It should have been easier to photograph, since I didn't have to dive--but somehow my pictures all seemed a little out of focus...

SAILFIN TANG: This picture doesn't show the very large fin he has on top, his "sail"--but it was pretty impressive.
